The Last Kingdom
The book captures the returning journey of The Last Kingdom Uhtred, a Saxon prince raised in the Danish camp, to Bebbenburg, his birth right. Banished from Wessex after killing a Sorbon text | dependant of the Viking-raised Uhtred who has a Norman blood but when fighting – he must rely on two gods of his fostering father. In the divided and defeated kingdom there is only a glimmer of light that everyone wants to follow – King Alfred of Wessex, and he notices in Uhtred abilities he needs at his court.
Together, they form a rather shaky alliance in order to fight the constantly advancing Danish forces. Hearths break, people bleed, and strategies are displayed throughout with Uhtred struggling for a single country that is England, even as he himself battles within, torn between two worlds- Shired and Danes. As Wessex is built up to be a symbol of Saxon rebellion against the Danes, Uhtred has to make the best of his birth land with the country that took him in and raise the question as to whom England belongs to.
Barbarians
Throwing hate, anger and a plethora of violence at each other, the battle was a hurricane of rage. Disciplined Roman lines, were cut to pieces by desperate Germanic warriors. Arminius, the apparition of the chaos, attacked the very core of the Roman commanders, his weapon a whirl of the death. Varus, who was mortally injured and lost his men’s trust, chose to die to avoid dishonor.
Victory was bittersweet. The Romans would come back with even more forcefulness. Arminius knew this. But for now they had drained from their masters the ring of liberty or freedom. Thus, the spirit of Germania had been revived. When the daylight met the morning fog, the long shadows stretching over the battle ground a new day was beginning. A sign of a fight back and somewhat of freedom since when perhaps a certain place could one day be free.

For as long as the vikings of Norheim have set their foot on the road that leads to the west they have been rich and powerful, but their power and riches are almost always overshadowed by battles for power and plots, die and jealousy.

Marco Polo

If you’ve watched Vikings: Valhalla, there’s a good chance you’ve also seen Vikings. If not, now’s the perfect time to start or revisit it.
